It’s hard to believe its been four years since Ella Mai has dropped her last album, but she blessed us with her new project ‘Heart On My Sleeve’ on Friday.
The album, which consists of 15 songs with features from artists such as Latto and Roddy Ricch, is an R&B masterpiece that gives good vibes all around. This is what we’ve come to expect from Ella. A go to artist to listen to when you want to get into your bag of love songs.
What is interesting is that not all songs touch on the traditional ballad. Some tracks focus on the darker emotions of love such as ‘Break My Heart’ echoing lyrics such as:
‘Cause if I had to choose who could break my heart / baby, it’ll be you’
And in ‘Hide’ where Ella vocalizes over a piano saying:
‘Remember I had nothing left to give / Til your eyes shined a light on my scarred soul’
My favorite track on the album was hard to narrow down to one, but I think I’ve rested on ‘How’ featuring Roddy Ricch. There’s an upbeat melody to it that reminds me of earlier hit work of Ella such as ‘Trip’ and ‘Boo’d Up’. If you put this song on you can guarantee you’ll be walking around singing it the rest of the day.
