You may know him from his viral song on TikTok “Here with You”, but he is far from a one hit wonder. D4vd has one of the best voices and unique sounds amongst the alternative hip hop scene, and last Friday he released his new EP Petals to Thorns.
The EP consists of just 5 songs, but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for ten times over with quality. If you listen the whole way through, it’s a story being told and d4vd opens up to his fans about some of his darker emotions and places he’s been in his life. He’s never been one to shy away from being vulnerable in his lyrics, but here he takes it to another level with a whole EP over slow and dark-toned production that really has some beautiful themes about the emotions felt while going through heartbreak.
David Anthony Burke, or dv4d as he goes by, is an 18 year old kid from Houston, Texas with very possibly the best vocals I’ve heard from not only a new kid coming up, but of anyone in recent memory in the hip-hop/alternative industry. Though he was clearly gifted with talent, it wasn’t until his mom encouraged him to make his own music that dv4d would take his future into his own hands and make the chart-topping songs he is now.
Like every kid in the last 5 years, dv4d grew up on Fortnite and was positing his clips to Youtube long before he was making incredible music. He launched into his music career after the clips he was posting kept getting copyrighted for using other artists music, and this is when his mom gave his the vision.
Riding on the back of giants who came before him in the alternative genre such as The Neighborhood and Arctic Monkeys, his musical prowess has set the genre on fire, and brought back an old school feel to the mainstream. His music is well thought out and his ability to tap into his vulnerability and construct lyrics that people can connect with is special.
His new EP Petals to Thorns is out now all on all major streaming platforms.
