Rex Orange County is by no means a rapper. He is a quirky and awkward musician from the UK, who just happens to make some of the best alternative music of our generation. On Friday, he continued his legacy with his new album ‘Who Cares?’.
I started listening to Rex semi-recently when a friend put me on to ‘Best Friend’, and ever since that track I began exploring his music becoming a major fan. Maybe it’s the way he dresses, or the way he sings on most of his songs, but there’s something very human about Rex that is what makes him so popular amongst his fans. Not only does he show his vulnerability on his songs, but because he’s so human it makes us fans feel like we can relate even more to him and his music.
‘Who Cares?’ was released on Friday with a track list consisting of 11 songs. The first song to drop on the album was ‘KEEP IT UP’ and from the minute I heard it I became very excited about what the full project may sound like. As it turned out this was a good basis and most of the songs followed suit with the single. They were all carried by a mix of violin intros and synths throughout the song, and it meshed with Rex’s voice really well.
Although, I think many people’s favorite track on the album will be ‘OPEN A WINDOW’ since it features non other than Rex’s good friend Tyler The Creator, my favorite track was undoubtedly ‘AMAZING’. The vocals on the track are beautifully and in my opinion some of his best work. Couple this with the message he is sending about a girl who came into his life out of nowhere and saved him from himself and it makes for such a powerful song. ‘WHO CARES?’ is out on all streaming platforms and I definitely will be adding this album to the playlist.
